It was a case of what could have been at St Mirren Park.
During the first half it was St Mirren who handed out most of the pressure and having passed up a couple of chances it was no surprise when St Mirren finally did take the lead.
Mark O'Hara, 23 mins in, fired a shot at goal but as Craig Gordon parried his shot it fell to Mikael Mandron who fired St Mirren into the lead.
St Mirren continued to dominate the 1st half but couldn't add to their score.
During the second half Hearts came more into the game without causing St Mirren too much trouble and just as St Mirren were thinking about a quarter final spot up popped Hearts substitute Calem Nieuwenhof to score with just 6 minutes of the 90 remaining.
In the 8th minute of time added on, Caolan Boyd-Munce cleared a shot off the goal line from Hearts Elton Kabangu.
1 - 1 at full time and the game went into extra time which was an uneventful 30 mins.
The game went to Penalty kicks with Craig Gordon saving the 1st two St Mirren spot kicks, it fell to Hearts James Penrice to score his and Hearts 4th penalty to put Hearts into the quarter finals, having won 4 - 2 on penalties.
